Gardening tips for March

Spring is here so there is lots to do to get your garden ready for a great growing season of ornamentals and vegetables:

Garden maintenance:

  • Lawn maintenance such as scarifying, aerating and feed and weed application to help you have a lush green lawn this summer

    Compost for borders

  • Mowing on warm, dry days
  • Pruning of shrubs like hydrangeas and fuschia that need keeping in check
  • Weeding and digging over beds
  • Mulching of borders or veg beds to give your garden the nutrients to grow and help improve soil structure and water retention
  • Seeding or turfing to repair or create a lawn
  • Pressure washing paths and decking to remove moss and algae

Fruit and veg growing:

  • Planting of new fruit bushes, trees or canes

  • Planting out of garlic started in cold frames
  • Outdoor sowing of early varieties of parsnips, broad beans and shallots
  • Under cover sowing of turnips, spinach, radishes and salad leaves
